Painting Your Steel Carport

Painting Your Steel Carport

You likely ordered a carport to fulfill practical needs like extra storage or as protection for your car and other vehicles. However, years of use can cause paint to fade and overtime your carport may not look as clean as when you first bought it. Whether you’re thinking of restoring your carport, or simply want to change the color scheme, there are several steps in choosing the best color and applying the new paint job to your carport.

Choose the Best Shades

When you work with American Steel Carports, Inc. for this project, you’ll have plenty of great options available for colors to add to your building. Our easy to use Build & Price tool allows you to visualize the final colors so you can pick the best colors.

As you go through this process of choosing the best colors to use, there are a few tips to keep in mind.

Monochrome Looks Sharp

When in doubt, opt for a color scheme that uses the same shade for both the roof and the trim on your carport. Yes, you can choose to pick a complementary color for your trim rather than matching it with the roof – and that can look great too – but taking the monochrome route is simple and classic. In other words, don’t force yourself to pick a second color if you already love one color and want it to be the star of the show.

You Don’t Have to Make a Statement

There are some great colors in our selection that will be sure to bring your carport to the foreground, such as slate blue and barn red. However, if you already like the way your property looks and you don’t want to make a bold move with your carport color, don’t hesitate to pick something that will blend in more than stand out. We have black as a color option, along with Pewter Gray, for shades that won’t draw too much attention.

Consider the Other Buildings

Assuming this is not the first structure to go up on a given piece of property, you can play off the other buildings with your color selection. That could mean trying to match up the colors nicely, or it could mean doing something completely different to avoid any clashing.

Painting an Existing Carport

If you choose to freshen up the color of your carport, or wish to change the paint color entirely, there are some basic tips to keep in mind for this process.

Keep in mind, however, that painting a carport purchases from American Steel Carports, Inc. will void any warranty coverage that is remaining on the structure. When you are first planning your carport, make sure you’ve taken the time to choose the color you’ll love for years to come.

With that said, here are some things to consider if you are preparing to paint an existing steel carport.

Clean the surface

No matter what you are painting, most of your success or failure will come back to how well you prepared for the job. With a metal carport, you need to clean the surface of the structure before applying any new primer or paint. That means stripping down any old paint that is peeling and carefully washing the carport to get rid of dirt, debris, etc. This job can take some time but it’s well worth it in the end.

Don’t Rush It

If your paint job requires more than one coat, which it likely will, be sure to give the building ample time to dry before going back to add another layer. How long this takes will depend on the weather conditions, the paint you are using, and the material of the carport you’re painting.

Get the Right Paint

When purchasing paint for this job, be sure to get help from a knowledgeable paint supplier who can inform you of the best product to use when painting an outdoor metal structure.

Find the Perfect Shade

Picking the right color for your carport can help it fit in with the rest of the structures on your property. Whether you want to match it with the color of your home, or you’d prefer to pick a contrasting shade, American Steel Carports, Inc. can help. We offer an array of customization options through our easy to use Build & Price tool.  There’s a great selection of colors for your new structure so you can visualize the color scheme that will work best for you and the rest of your property.
