What Does Roof Pitch Mean? 

Roof pitch is simply the steepness of a roof. It is expressed as a ratio, representing the vertical rise of the roof compared to its horizontal run. That might sound a little complicated, but it’s actually quite simple in practice. 

How Do You Calculate Roof Pitch?

If a roof gains three feet of vertical height over a nine-foot span (or run), that means the roof is nine feet wide and rises three feet from its lowest point to its highest point. This ratio reduces to 1:3 — the roof rises one foot for every three feet of run. Because roof pitch is usually expressed per 12 inches of run, this example translates to a 4:12 pitch. A steeper roof might be 6:12, while a flatter one could be closer to 3:12.
