What Carport Size Is Best For You?

Picking the right carport size is perhaps the most important decision you will make in the entire buying process. There are a few other choices to make—roof style, color, etc.—but selecting an appropriate size is your first job. If you get the size wrong, after all, the final product will not be able to work properly for your needs. Fortunately, when you work with American Steel Carports, it’s easy to customize your carport to get whatever size and other features you need.

Standard Carport Sizes

To start, let’s discuss some common carport sizes, so you can get a handle on what to expect when you start shopping.

Single Carports

A single-width carport is traditionally going to be 12’ wide. This will provide plenty of space to park a standard car or pickup truck while still allowing you to open the doors and get in or out. If you plan on using your carport to park a single vehicle, there is a good chance the standard 12’ width style will be the right pick for you.

Double Carports

Of course, if you need to park two or three cars, you’ll need something wider. Double carports generally are between 18’ and 24’ wide, depending on the specific vehicles in question.

Triple Carports

Moving up to a three-car structure can take your carport width up to 30’. When you work with American Steel Carports, you can certainly opt for structures even bigger than that if you’d like more space!

Other Dimensions

In addition to width, there are two other dimensions to take into consideration here: length and height. For both of these dimensions, the key again is to come back to the original question of what you’ll be parking under the carport. A small sedan will only need a modest length carport—something around 21’ should do the job—while a big truck or an RV will need much more space both in terms of length and height.

Thinking of the Future

At this moment, you may only have one vehicle that needs to be parked under a carport. But do you expect it to stay that way moving forward? Maybe, maybe not. If you think there is a possibility that you’ll need more carport space in the future, it might be wise to build your structure with that in mind. As long as you have the space available for a larger structure, building with an eye toward the future will save you from having to completely rebuild later if your needs change.

There are a couple of ways you can look toward the future when designing your carport. For one, you could build a two-car carport even if you only need to park one under the structure at the time being. Knowing you have covered parking available, you won’t have to hesitate when the opportunity arises to pick out another car or truck.

As another option, you could decide to just build a one-car carport but make it bigger than you need currently in case you buy a larger vehicle in the future. Adding even a small amount of space to your carport upfront will leave you with more flexibility down the line if you have your eye on a larger SUV or truck. No one can predict the future perfectly, but you can make your best guess and choose a carport size that you think will stand the test of time!
