Hot Climate? Beat the Heat with Garage Door Insulation

Hot Climate? Beat the Heat with Garage Door Insulation

The summer can be a tough time to spend time in your garage working on projects. The soaring temperatures outside can make a garage space – one that isn’t served by the HVAC system – downright unbearable. While it might not be the same as air conditioning, adding insulation to your garage door can go a long way toward neutralizing the temperatures in your garage and making it more comfortable throughout the year.

If you are interested in building a new garage on your property to use for a variety of purposes, your first step is to design that building in terms of its size, layout, and more. For that, the Build & Price tool here on our site is an excellent first step. Explore the options we provide, and reach out to us directly if you have questions. We would be excited to serve you!

Avoid the Big Temperature Swings

A metal garage door does an excellent job of conducting heat from the outside and bringing it to the inside. In this case, that’s not a good thing – we want to keep as much heat as possible outside of the space. To make that happen, an insulating layer needs to be added to the door. That insulation will go a long way toward preventing the kinds of big swings in temperature that can make a garage so uncomfortable in the summer.

It’s frustrating to go out to your garage on a summer morning to find that it feels pretty comfortable in the morning hours – only for it quickly to warm up to the point where you can’t stay out there any longer. Adding insulation isn’t going to completely eliminate that warm-up, of course, but it will help to significantly cut down how quickly it happens and what temperature is reached inside the space on the hottest of days.

Garage Door Insulation is an Affordable Upgrade

One of the best things about using insulation to make your garage more comfortable is the modest cost of the project. You won’t need to break the bank to make this happen, whether you are adding insulation retroactively to an existing garage or you are going to build a new structure and you want to have an insulated door included from the start.

You can directly compare the cost of insulating your garage door to a bigger project, like adding an HVAC system to the space. Of course, adding HVAC to the garage would work wonders in terms of keeping it cool in the summer, but this project comes with enormous costs, both upfront for the installation of costly equipment and over the years, as you have to pay for the energy to run that equipment. Insulating your garage door is a one-time cost that will make the garage more comfortable immediately and cost you nothing from month to month.

Other Garage Features to Consider

If you are in the middle of planning to build a new garage on your property and you want to nail this project right from the start, consider adding some other features beyond an insulated door to make the garage as useful and comfortable as possible. One such feature would be including a window or two in the design so you can open them up and get a nice breeze through the garage when the weather cooperates. If the only opening for your garage is the roll-up door in the front, it will be hard for air to move around and the space could feel stuffy for most of the summer.

Also, in the design phase, experiment with adding a walk-in door to the side of the garage so you don’t have to roll up the big door every time you want to come and go. This is a nice feature that will again make you more inclined to spend time in your garage. Also, this walk-in door can serve as another “window” in that it can be opened up to promote airflow at different times throughout the day.

Build a Custom Garage

Insulating a garage door can certainly make it more comfortable to spend time in the garage space during the summer, but you need to first have a useful garage space before any of that will matter. To create a new metal building that is durable and affordable, turn to the experts at American Steel Carports, Inc. for the project. Now is the best time to get started!
