7 Garage Storage Hacks

7 Garage Storage Hacks

A garage is the ultimate storage space. Usually, your garage will be located rather close to your home, making it easy to retrieve items and bring them in whenever you like. That’s certainly the case for an attached garage, and even a detached garage will probably be just a short walk from the house.

If you’d like to get the most possible use out of your available garage space, the tips – or “hacks” – in this article should be helpful. Of course, the right approach to garage storage will depend on what stuff you have to store, so view these tips through the lens of what your needs are and how the space can be customized for maximum efficiency.

You can’t use a garage for storage if you don’t have a garage available, so solve that problem by turning to American Steel Carports, Inc. to place an order right away. We have a convenient Build & Price tool for you to create your own design, and our team is always ready to assist if you contact us. Don’t wait any longer to build the garage of your dreams!

#1 – Take Advantage of All Vertical Space

To get the most out of your garage from a storage perspective, you’ll need to be sure to use any vertical space that is available. If you are lucky enough to have a high ceiling in the garage, use that space above your head to store things that you don’t need to get down very often. Sure, you’ll need to pull out a ladder to retrieve items from lofted storage, but if that only happens once or twice a year, it’s really not a big deal.

Holiday decorations are the perfect example of this concept. These are things you want to keep, but they don’t come out often – so there’s no harm in storing them up and out of the way. Then, you can pull them down when the holiday season rolls around and tuck them back away when it’s over.

#2 – Use Labels….On Everything

There is no way to overstate the value of labels in a garage storage setting. Rather than having to dig through box after box to find what you need, you’ll be able to quickly scan the collection and find what you need on the first try. The benefit of this is not only about saving time and frustration, although that’s a big part of it. Also, you can avoid leaving a mess behind when you dig out a bunch of boxes and then fail to put them back away in a timely manner.

#3 – Make Use of Pegboard

For small items that you want to keep readily accessible – like some hand tools – pegboard is a great choice. You can purchase pegboard to attach to a portion of your garage wall for a minimal cost and it can make a huge difference in terms of your storage and overall organization. With this setup in place, you’ll always have things like screwdrivers and hammers close at hand.

#4 – Shift Furniture from House to Garage

Are you done with a certain bookshelf or cabinet in your house and are thinking of throwing it out or giving it away? Before you take that step, consider looking in your garage to see if you could repurpose the item for storage. This is a great way to get more use out of old things and it will also help you save money by not buying storage items that are made specifically for the garage (and usually come at a high price).

#5 – Build a Workbench

You don’t need to be an avid DIYer to make use of a simple workbench. Adding a workbench, with some storage space below it, can help you utilize your garage effectively, even for simple repair tasks like gluing something back together. And, by having the storage under the bench, you can avoid developing too much clutter around the rest of the space.

#6 – Clear Bins for the Win

When shopping for some simple garage storage solutions, favor clear bins over those with dark sides. This way, you can see right into the bins and immediately see if what you need is inside. Yes, the labels that we discussed earlier can help on this point, but sometimes, it’s hard to list everything on a label. Between labels and using clear bins, you’ll eliminate all storage confusion.

#7 – Get Rid of Stuff!

Finally, we couldn’t end this article without talking about the value of downsizing your possessions. Most likely, there are at least a few things in your garage that you just don’t need anymore. Hold a sale or give things away to charity, and your storage problems will immediately become easier to solve.

We hope at least a few of these tips will help you store everything that needs to find a home in your garage. It might take a bit of time and effort to get things worked out, but keep these ideas in mind as you work toward a more organized, less stressful garage. Thanks for taking the time to visit American Steel Carports, Inc., and be sure to reach out if a new garage building is on your agenda.
