Guide to Garage Ventilation Options

Guide to Garage Ventilation Options

It’s easy for a garage space to get hot, musty, and uncomfortable. After all, the standard garage is not served by an HVAC system, so it doesn’t have the ongoing flow of air in and out that would be expected inside of a house or other indoor space. So, with that in mind, it’s important to consider how you can ventilate your garage to keep the air as fresh as possible.

We’d like to present some garage ventilation ideas below to help you tackle this important topic. If at all possible, it’s a great idea to deal with ventilation when you are planning the construction of a new garage, and for that, you can work with American Steel Carports, Inc. on the project. We have a convenient Build & Price tool that makes it easy to lay out exactly what you want to see in your new building, and our friendly team is available if you contact us for assistance. Let’s get started today!

Simple Options for Garage Ventilation

It’s always best to start a project like this with the simplest options that you have available for ventilation, and you can look into more advanced solutions later, as necessary. In terms of simplicity, there is nothing easier than just opening up a door or window to get some fresh air into the garage. Even if there isn’t much of a breeze at the time, just having the space open to the outside will make a huge difference.

Most likely, you are going to have a large roll-up door at the front of your garage, so you can open that when you want to get a bunch of fresh air. However, it’s also a good idea to include a couple of windows in your design if you can, because those can be opened up for just a bit of ventilation when you don’t want to have the big door open. Of course, if you order your garage from American Steel Carports, Inc., adding custom options like windows is an easy process and will come at only a minor cost increase.

Adding Some Power

If you find that you will be spending a lot of time in your garage, it might not be sufficient to just be able to open a door or window. This is especially true if you live in a hot, humid climate – the garage could quickly become too uncomfortable to use for any significant amount of time.

In that case, you’ll want to have power available to run some fans. The combination of an open door or window with a fan that can blow air throughout the garage will elevate the experience significantly for a very minimal cost. This approach makes it easy to bring fresh air in – and root out the old, stagnant air – and you can simply flip the fans on or off as you need to make sure you stay as comfortable as possible.

The Ideal Solution is HVAC

Looking for the optimal way to keep your garage as comfortable as possible throughout the year? A proper HVAC system is the way to go. Yes, this will be costly, but it will allow you to keep the garage as comfortable as your house, and the things you store inside of the garage will appreciate the temperature and humidity control, as well.

Depending on the size and layout of your garage, a mini-split system may be the ideal choice. You would have to have this type of equipment installed by a professional, so the upfront cost will be notable. If that’s not feasible at this time, an alternative option would be to use a portable air conditioning unit that can be vented out through a window. A portable AC isn’t going to give you the same kind of performance as a permanent unit, but it will be far better than nothing and will make your garage quite useful even during the hot summer season.
