What is a Lean-to for an RV Garage?  

As the name suggests, a lean-to is a building that looks like it is leaning onto the side of another building. In this case, that would be the side of an RV garage. Of course, the structure in question isn’t actually “leaning” – it is properly constructed and installed to meet all building code requirements and stand the test of time. In the past, such additions may simply have been leaned up against an existing building, but that’s not how we do things today.

So, why would you bother adding a lean-to along the side of your RV garage? There are a few reasons that this could be a good option in your situation. The first, of course, is that you feel like you are running out of space inside the garage itself. If you don’t have much room for storage once you park the RV in its place, adding a lean-to could provide you with that storage. RV owners typically have a lot of accessories and equipment that go along with the RV, so the lean-to could be the perfect place to put such items when they aren’t in use.   

You may also wish to use a lean-to as a way to cover the entrance and exit to the RV garage. If you have a door on the side that you use for walking in and out – as opposed to the big roll-up door on the front that is used to move the RV in and out – you could place your lean-to over that side door and be protected from the weather. So far, we’ve been talking a lot about why a lean-to is great for an RV garage, and that certainly is the case. It’s not the case, however, that absolutely every RV garage needs to add a lean-to, so let’s quickly discuss when it would make more sense to skip this useful feature.   

The biggest issue that would cause you to opt against a lean-to is a lack of space. If you don’t have enough room to practically put a lean-to in place and be able to use it comfortably, you might not be able to pursue this plan.   

Another factor to consider is whether it may be better to just upgrade to a larger RV garage rather than taking the lean-to route. Building a new metal RV garage could be more affordable than you expect, and having as much indoor space as possible for both RV parking and your storage needs would be a convenient, flexible solution.
