How to Prevent Catalytic Converter Theft

When you start your car, you’ll know immediately if your catalytic converter has gone missing. The telltale sign is a loud rumbling or roaring sound as soon as you start your engine. Unfortunately, replacing this part isn’t cheap. In fact, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reported that the average cost of repair and replacement is somewhere between $1,000 and $3,000.

Once you’ve shelled out the cash for a catalytic converter repair, chances are you’ll want to do everything you can to prevent it from happening again. And, with the holidays quickly approaching, now is the best time of year to protect your vehicle from theft. Here are three ways to avoid catalytic converter theft.

How Common Is Catalytic Converter Theft?

In 2018, a study from the NICB reported an average of 108 catalytic converter thefts in the United States per month. However, in 2020 following the pandemic, the NICB saw those numbers skyrocket to a whopping 652 cases per month in January 2020 and 2,347 in December 2020. The NICB also noted that the actual number of stolen catalytic converters may be even higher since many automobile owners choose not to report these thefts. Why? The cost of repairs is often less than a car insurance plan’s deductible.

Why Are Thefts on the Rise?

Catalytic converters contain precious metals, like rhodium, that are more valuable than gold. Thieves often take stolen catalytic converters to scrapyards and walk away with a pocket full of cash. Although stealing a converter is a felony, buying or selling one of these illegally is only a misdemeanor. Therefore, the profits are worth the risk for many sketchy car scrapyards. Even worse, a catalytic converter theft can happen in less than a minute. Opportunistic thieves often come equipped with pneumatic car jacks and cordless saws and complete the theft before anyone even notices it.

3 of the Best Ways to Prevent Catalytic Converter Theft

Theft can happen anywhere. Fortunately, there are a few ways that you can protect your vehicle. The key to thwarting theft is making your vehicle less desirable and more difficult to target. If you’re ready to get started, here’s what to do.

#1 Install a Metal Garage

Parking in a closed garage is one of the most effective and money-smart ways to prevent theft. Not only will a locked metal structure deter catalytic converter theft, but it will also prevent vehicle theft of any kind. Additionally, metal garages offer the ultimate protection for your vehicle(s) and property at a lower cost than a traditional garage.

If you’re shopping for a metal garage, keep in mind that they aren’t all created with the same level of quality. Look for structures made from stainless steel for built-in corrosion resistance. Additionally, work with a trusted builder that offers warranties for their structures. At American Steel, we are proud to offer 20-year warranties for our stainless steel buildings and garages.

#2 Install a Cage or Clamp

In general, cages and clamps are mostly affordable options. These can be installed by anyone familiar with the underpinnings of a vehicle. However, we suggest consulting with your auto service center. One of the most popular catalytic converter clamps is the CatStrap. By design, this strap lays across your catalytic converter and provides a dense protective layer that dulls the teeth of a saw blade. There are also catalytic converter cages that are bolted or even welded to the vehicle’s frame. These anti-theft devices are usually made of high-quality, durable metal, like stainless steel or aluminum.

#3 Spray Paint Your Catalytic Converter

If you’re short on cash, spray paint is the cheapest option for deterring thieves. Because thieves must remove all the paint from the converter before taking it to the scrapyard, they will typically take one look at a brightly colored catalytic converter and run.

Other Methods

  • Etch your VIN into your catalytic converter: This allows police to recover your catalytic converter if it is stolen. Common sense says that if someone is illegally buying scrap metal, they likely won’t care if there is an etched VIN or not. However, if a thief is carrying your catalytic converter and they are pulled over in a traffic stop–should their vehicle be searched–you may be able to recover your catalytic converter.
  • Install a catalytic converter alarm system: Catalytic converter alarm systems are motion-sensor alarms that sound off whenever a catalytic converter is jostled. These are typically easy to install. Conversely, they are easy to uninstall. While inexperienced thieves may see an alarm and run, the pros may simply cut the alarm off and continue with the theft.

Protect Your Vehicle with American Steel

As you can see, there are several options when it comes to protecting your vehicle from theft. But, nothing compares to the peace of mind and home security offered by a metal garage.

While building a traditional garage can be expensive, you can accomplish the same goal for a lower cost with the help of American Steel Carports. How to Wash Your RV

As an RV owner, washing your rig might not be your favorite task, but it certainly is an important one to keep up with during the travel season. If you get into the habit of regularly washing your RV after trips, it will always be clean and ready to go the next time you get to head out. Also, keeping it clean helps you get a longer life out of your investment, and that’s something everyone can appreciate. Washing an RV doesn’t need to be complicated, but there are some keys to keep in mind. Read on for some basic tips to help you get great results while saving time for other chores around the house.

And, if you’d like to keep your RV as clean as possible while it is parked on your property, consider adding an RV carport from American Steel Carports, Inc. Explore our free Build & Price tool to create a custom structure that perfectly suits your needs. For help, contact us! Our team is always happy to help.

Set the Stage for Success

A big piece of the puzzle when trying to wash your RV successfully is having everything in place before you get started. If you plan and are organized for this task, you’ll find that it goes much easier from start to finish and you will be left with a better outcome. Some things to consider include the following –

  • Get the right gear. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on cleaning supplies for your RV, but you do need to have a few key items ready to go. For starters, you need a clean bucket for water, soap, a few different brushes, and a ladder. Consider creating an RV washing “kit” that you can store in a specific spot in your garage to always have ready.
  • Find a good spot. It’s important to pick out a good spot on your property to do the washing. If you have an RV carport, you might want to wash your RV right there under the roof of the carport – you’ll get some shade on hot days and the space should be pretty clean. Wherever you decide to do the washing, make sure it is an area that will drain nicely so you won’t wind up standing in a pool of dirty water as the cleaning process moves along.
  • Pick the right day. Pay attention to the weather forecast and look for a day that offers mild temperatures, minimal wind, and no rain. Washing an RV – especially a big one like a motorhome – can take some time, and you don’t want to be battling the conditions along the way.

A Simple Process

If there is one key rule to obey when washing an RV, it is this – start at the top and work your way down. Not only is the top the least-convenient part to wash, so it’s nice to get it out of the way at the start, but the water you use is also going to run down the sides of the rig toward the ground. So, by starting at the top, you’ll be able to work your way down and eliminate any streaks that were created along the way.

In addition to starting at the top, remember that you want to clean a wet RV rather than a dry one. So, before you reach for your soapy brush to start scrubbing, spray down the whole RV to wet the exterior. This helps you get better results from your scrubbing efforts.

Dealing with Specific Elements

For most of the exterior surface of your RV, all you need is a soapy brush and some water to get the job done. However, there are a few different elements that you may encounter along the way, and those need to be dealt with properly to avoid trouble. Three big ones include:

  • RV roof. Your approach to washing the roof of your RV depends on its composition. If it’s a relatively new RV, the roof is probably fiberglass, in which case it will be simple to clean with the same general techniques you’ve been using around the rest of the rig. However, if you happen to have a rubber roof, seek out a cleaner that has been specifically formulated for that type of surface.
  • Don’t forget about your RV’s awning in the cleaning process. Unroll it to expose the full length of the awning and then spray it down with water. It’s probably not very dirty, so that spray might be all you need. If there are spots that need to be scrubbed, do so gently to avoid stretching out the material.
  • Keeping your window and door seals in good condition is essential to keep water out as you travel. When you are done with the RV washing process, consider spraying the seals with a product that has been designed to keep them supple. This is a quick task that can save you some major headaches down the line.

Not only is an RV carport a great place to store your rig while protecting it from the elements, but it also makes for a nice spot to do your washing. With some shade from the sun, you can take your time and make sure the RV is fully cleaned before calling it a day.

If you’re ready to protect one of your greatest investments, reach out to American Steel Carports, Inc. to create an affordable, durable metal home for your RV. We look forward to serving you!

Build it Your Self

It’s Time For A New Project

For some people, purchasing a carport from scratch means a new project to learn how to build a carport. For others it may be a chance to improve their do it yourself (DIY) or building skills. Even though our professional installers are delighted to build your homemade carport for you, here at American Carports we understand the excitement a new building project brings for some of our customers.

Even though this might be a discount for some it could also cause a hassle for others. We give two options on that matter. One option is for us to provide all the material and you can pick it up or we could also deliver the material all the way to your home. The discount will depend on your location. This is a great option to consider when you have the ability to build it for yourself or if it’s a small and simple project. Just in case you get stuck in some steps we also do provide an installation manual.

Building your own carport can have its pros and cons. Putting up your carport together brings the satisfaction of a job well done. For many other people it can also make you feel safer knowing that you have done everything correctly and more firm. As fun as it may seem, sometimes you might get stuck in-between the process and causes to leave the project halfway done. This might not seem like the solution, especially after all the money you have spent. Also with us giving you that option, it avoids the warranties that we include when we build the building for you.

For example, this 12’W x 21’L x 7’H was a self install order from California. As you can see it seems like a quick and easy installation, resulting in a discounted price for this customer. You can save some money, but we always recommend to always rather be safe than sorry.

Important Factors to Consider Before Investing in a Building

Many companies will try to get you to buy a carport, but there are many things you should consider before doing so. We all have to put consideration to our location and weather when it comes to choosing a structure. Sometimes it will even require a little research. Here are four of the most important factors to consider before investing in a building.

1. Pricing

Plenty of people habitually price-check their purchases, especially if it’s a large purchase that will serve as an investment. An investment is something that will benefit us in the long run, not just immediately. It’s important to consider a budget or price range for these bigger purchases. It all depends on the features you need and how long it’s going to last. One way to feel less pressured when considering an investment is by looking at all the options available. Here at American Steel Carports, we have two options for purchasing buildings aside from payment in full: financing or the rent to own option.

2. Building Regulations

Some cities require a permit in order for installation. Sometimes this can cause problems, especially if you find out at the last minute. To prevent this situation, it’s important to know what are the requirements in your area prior to buying a unit. For a permit, you will need the specifics of your new building, which ASCI can supply for free. With some cities, you will need draws and calcs, and those do come with an additional charge separately from your building.

3. Stability

Stability is also another big factor to consider. When you make a purchase, quality should always be important. There is a chance that you might find some high-quality things available at cheaper prices, but for the most part, price is a good indicator of quality. It’s always better to stay on the safe side. Why buy something cheaper when the more expensive option will last twice as long? At ASCI, we provide two different types of materials and we will always suggest the best for you as our customer. All of our buildings are engineer-certified, so you can be certain that your building is made to last.

4. Meeting Your Needs

Do you know what exactly you’re looking for? It’s okay if you don’t. We understand that with all the different styles of buildings, sometimes it’s hard to decide. We have lots of options, so it all depends on what exactly you’re looking for. Protection for your car? A game room? A workshop? We have all of those!
Here are some of the features we provide that you can modify:
• Dimensions: Width x Length x Height
• Color: We provide 12 different colors at no extra charge.
• Roof type:
◦ Standard – this roof comes with the rounded corners on the ends
◦ A-frame Horizontal – sheet metal runs horizontally
◦ A-frame Vertical – panels run from the peak towards the sides. This is our sturdier roof that lets water, snow, or dirt run down the roof rather than piling up and potentially causing a collapse.

If you have any other questions about any of this information, call us at 866-730-9865 and get one of our professionals to help you.

Summer is Coming: Get Your Pool Area Ready

Winter is finally on its way out, and we can hear Spring knocking. WThat means Summer will be here before you know it. Summer means something different to everyone, but one common denominator is the pool. It’s a meeting place and retreat from the cruel summer heat… The pool can be perfect for relaxing and stirring up laughter. It’s a great setting for a neighborhood celebration, birthdays, team parties, keeping the kids entertained, or gathering the adults for some grown-up conversation.

Now that we have the fun out of the way, let’s get down to business. There’s a lot that goes into the upkeep of a pool. There are all the tools needed for maintenance and repair, as well as chemicals, and the toy collection you have amassed.

We have the perfect idea for a pool house to keep the pool area more organized as well as the yard clean from party debris.

Our buildings work perfectly for smaller yards that still need the access and organization that a pool house brings. American Steel Carport buildings are completely customizable to fit any size needs. Since most pool houses can be wide open with a small room for changing, our open floor plan works perfectly.

Whether you need your pool house to be big enough to add a bar and host company, or you just want something to store tools, supplies, and toys, we can take care of you.

We’ve also mentioned in a previous blog that our carport cover is perfect for pool covers. They provide protection from leaves and other debris, as well as shade for those who want the heat but not the direct sunlight.  They also make it easy to swim during summer rain, which is great for people who depend on the pool for daily exercise or rehabilitation.

We would love to talk to you about your new pool house or pool cover! Feel free to call us at 866-730-9865 or online at Americansteelinc.com.
