Carport and Storage Unit Organization Tips

For anyone that has a home, a major issue that typically arises sooner or later is storage. This is especially true if you have a family. As years go on and on, the more stuff you start to accumulate. Before you know it, you’ve run out of space and it’s either time to find a better way to store things or you need to purge. In some situations, it may a combination of both.

If you find yourself in need to get extra storage and have some extra yard space, a storage unit or carport may be a good option for you and your family.  Since it is on your property, it’s convenient, and unlike renting a storage unit, you actually save money in the long run. However, to prevent the same issues from occurring or to prevent having an unorganized unit, it’s a good idea to come up with ways to properly store items in it.

4 Ways to organize Your New Carport or Storage Unit

When organizing your new storage unit or carport, it may require you to think both conventionally and unconventionally.

Tip #1: Invest in Custom or DIY Shelving

Including shelving in your storage unit is an easy way for you to get organized. In fact, many home improvement stores like Lowes and Home Depot offer pre-made outdoor storage shelving solutions. There are many options available in various materials. Depending on what you want to store on your shelves will help you determine whether you need a sturdy plastic or metal option. Either way, the possibilities are endless! And if you’re feeling handy, opt to make your own custom shelving storage solution with wood. For some good ideas, search Pinterest for some good DIY pins.

Tip #2: Think Vertically

A lot of people only think about the space on the floor when they think about organizing their storage unit. However, it is smart to also think about using the vertical space, too. Items that you won’t use very often like bicycles or holiday decorations are great items to hang up higher. Although to reach these items it may require a ladder, it won’t be much of a hassle to pull your ladder down to reach these items when they’re needed.

Tip #3: Use Stackable Bins and Storage Containers

Anything stackable is a plus when it comes to organizing items and getting them out of your way. Using stackable bins or storage containers allow you to take advantage of more floor space. Remember, as long as you have a ladder, you can build vertically (see tip #2!).

Tip #4: Get Friendly with Pegboard and Hooks

Pegboards are inexpensive yet very functional. Hang one of these nifty boards on the wall of your storage unit, add some hooks, and you instantly have a nice looking tool storage option.

Bonus Tip: Tackle the Large Items First

When you pack your luggage or your car for a trip, the rule of thumb is that you put in your larger items first. The same goes for organizing your storage or carport unit to maximize space. Once you find a place for the large items you will be storing, the smaller items will be a breeze in the wind.

Use this 4 organization tips (plus a bonus) to help make the most of your new carport and eliminate clutter for good.

Doors For Your Future Metal Garage

For fully enclosed steel garages, doors are a necessity. Did you know that American Steel offers its customers the choice of overhead or roll-up doors? In addition to our garage doors, we carry mobile home doors, allowing easy accessibility for your smaller tasks. We also keep our warehouses stocked with a number of standard door sizes (6’x6’, 8’x6’, 9’x7’, 10’x8’, and 10’x10’), allowing you the fastest scheduling possible. As if that weren’t enough, American Steel gives its customers many options for customizing doors to fit their specific needs.

Roll-up doors are a great, cost-effective access point to any steel garage. They come with ribbed steel panels and are spring-loaded, giving them a weightless feel. The standard color of our roll-up doors is white, but this can be upgraded to any of our 12* custom colors. As mentioned above, our warehouses stock six standard sizes, but doors can be custom-ordered in any size to accommodate your clearance needs. Please keep in mind that all of our roll-up doors operate manually and cannot be insulated, however.

Standard overhead doors are a fantastic upgrade in comparison to the roll-up door. Their beautiful short panel design is sure to wow the neighbors, and the upgrade features include the options to add beautiful glass windows or insulation and the ability to order custom sizes that best suit your needs. One of the top reasons that customers choose the overhead door, additionally, is that they are able to function with an electric opener**, making your metal garage or carport accessible with the push of a button.

Furthermore, American Steel Carports recommends that our customers add a walk-in door, otherwise referred to as a service door. This allows customers a secondary entrance point and easy access to the storage space for smaller items. The walk-in door comes in three available sizes (36”x72”, 36”x80”, and, in some locations, the 72”x72” double door). All of the walk-in doors come in white and feature a basic door handle with keys for your security needs. Also, American Steel Carports is now offering a new item! Be sure to ask your sales rep about our new 20-gauge steel insulated heavy-duty walk in doors. For an additional cost, moreover, we offer framed-out openings for your personal or pre-owned doors.

American Steel Carports understands that this is not a one-size-fits-all world. We offer all of the latest top-quality door options for your entrance requirements. In addition, we are always happy to accommodate our customers’ specific needs. American Steel is here for you, so give us a call and let our qualified customer service representatives help you to build the steel garage of your dreams with doors that you’ll love.

Visit our accessories page for more information on other accessories such as insulation, solar panels, and more!

*Custom doors can take an additional 2-4 weeks for scheduling.

**American Steel Carports offers the professional installation of overhead doors, but does not provide or install electrical garage door openers.

A-Frames Built for Style and Strength

When thinking of a carport or a steel garage, it’s more than likely that the standard roof style comes to mind. These roofs, recognizable for their 3’/12” pitch and curved sides, can be seen throughout the United States. You may have noticed that the panels on the roofs run from end to end, with a 6-inch overhang. Customers who are seeking cost-effective storage solutions have been happily ordering them from American Steel and enjoying the low cost and maintenance results for many years. However, as the need for storage has expanded, so have the needs of our customers.

American Steel Carports proudly offers several roofing options to fit your needs. Here, you will read about our A-frame roof style features and options. With the A-frame’s continuing popularity, it is no wonder why more and more customers are asking about the benefits of the A-frame and deciding to make the upgrade.

A-frame styles have definitely become a growing trend. They look fantastic in residential areas and provide additional strength to carports or steel garages. American Steel Carports offers the A-frame with the choice of placing the roof panels either horizontally or vertically. Both of these options require a minimum of a 6-foot leg height to accommodate the 4’/12” pitch. They are both finished with a beautiful box eave trim and a 6-inch overhang.

The differences between the two can be quite interesting, though. The A-frame horizontal option is installed with the panels placed along the length of the carport or garage. This roof style has gained in popularity recently because it offers customers an affordable way to match the roof styles of their homes and/or existing garages. In comparison to the standard-style roof, it does allow for some additional protection from snow loads because of its higher pitch.

For maximum protection, however, American Steel Carports recommends the A-frame vertical roof, especially in areas that have larger snowfall or strict snow-load restrictions. With the vertical design, the panels run from the ridge cap downwards, giving the snow, ice, and debris very little chance to build up.

Both the A-frame horizontal and the A-frame vertical can be enhanced with additional truss and bracing to ensure that you have as much protection as you need. Also, your questions, thoughts, and concerns can be properly addressed by calling one of our skilled sales reps or highly educated engineers. Whether you are going for style or additional strength, American Steel Carports has you covered.
